How I Know

I've figured out that Lucy can distinguish between a few words.

For a few weeks I've been thinking that she was only saying "Hi DEEH-dah" to me. ("Hi Dida" is her attempt to say "Hi Dada.") Today, in the midst of a stream of "ma ma ma ma" she looked at me and said "Hi Dida." I think, whether or not she knows I'm "Di-da" she knows to say that to me.

Conversely, Tracy and I have been teasing and thrilling Lucy by playing "I'm gonna getcha!" Everytime she hears those words, she shrieks and giggles and attempts to get away. Today, to see what kind of response I'd get, I decided to stay very still and expressionless and say it very square and matter-of-factly. "I am going to get you." She squealed and scampered across the floor.

She knows.
